What are the steps involved in placing a Dental Implant?
1. The first step is treatment planning which involves evaluating your bone and determining where the implant will be placed. Patient's questions will be answered and consent forms signed.
2. If an extraction and/or bone grafting is needed, this will be done in conjunction with the implant placement. You will then have a 4-6 month healing period while the implant integrates with your bone. A healing cap will be placed prior to the final restoration being completed.
3. Once integration is complete an impression will be taken for the final restoration. Approximately 3 weeks later, you will have your permanent crown/bridge that will attach to the implant post. The implant process is complete.

Do you have an active lifestyle and prefer not to wear dentures? If you are missing one or even several teeth, our dental team may want to discuss dental implants and their benefits with you.
-
Spaces created by missing teeth may cause your remaining teeth to shift out of position and make them more susceptible to tooth decay and gum disease. Many patients choose implants to replace a single tooth, several teeth, or to support a full set of dentures.
Implants are cylinders that are surgically placed in the upper or lower jaw where they function as a sturdy anchor for replacement teeth. They are made of titanium and other materials that are compatible with the human body. For the highest success rate, patients should be in good overall health and have healthy gums. The placement of an implant is a multi-step process that will take several months to complete. Once the implant is placed, we wait 4-6 months for the implant to integrate into the bone. After this time, we will uncover the top of the implant and prepare for the final restoration. Most patients find that an implant is secure and stable and a wonderful alternative to a removable bridge or denture.
Regular dental visits are essential to the life and long-term success of your implant. Dr. Sprout will provide you with the proper recall program to ensure the health of your implant and your natural teeth.
Frequently Asked Questions
1. What are Dental Implants?
Dental implants are artificial replacements (generally titanium posts) that are placed into the bone to take the place of your missing root/tooth. Implants offer a permanent solution to tooth loss. They also open up alternative restorative options such as crowns, bridges and dentures without damaging adjacent teeth.
2. What are the benefits of Dental Implants?
- Dental implants are stronger and more durable than their restorative counterparts. - It helps prevent bone loss where the tooth is missing - Implants restore the ability to chew properly - If a missing tooth is not replaced, it can cause shifting of adjacent teeth and over time may lead to tooth decay or periodontal disease.
3. Who is a candidate for Dental Implants?
If you are in good general health with healthy gums and jawbone that can support an implant, this treatment may be an option for you. In fact, your health can be more of a factor that your age. If you use tobacco, you are at a greater risk for gum disease which can weaken the bone and tissues needed to support the implant.
4. How long do Dental Implants last?
There is no guarantee that an implant procedure will be successful, but studies have shown a five-year success rate of 95% for lower jaw implants and 90% for upper jaw implants. This difference is due to the density of the bone in the jaw. Smokers face a much higher failure rate, therefore it is recommended to give up smoking before going through the implant process.
5. What happens if my body rejects the Dental Implant?
Maintaining your dental hygiene is the most important role you will play in the long-term success of your implant. In the rare instances that implants do not function properly, your doctor can remove the implant and allow the area to heal. Many times another implant can be placed in the future.
6. Why have Dental Implants become so popular?
Conventional treatment options for tooth replacement address the short term cosmetic problem of missing teeth, but do nothing to stop the bone loss. However, with implants, healthy teeth are left alone. Plus, dental implants, like natural teeth, transmit chewing forces to the jaw stimulating it and healing bone loss. Many leading dental organizations now recognize dental implants as the standard of care for tooth replacement.
7. Does it hurt to have Dental Implants placed?
Since this is considered a surgery, there may be some swelling and or tenderness or discomfort. Pain medication is usually prescribed in the event that you need it. Post operative instructions will also be provided after the appointment and a follow up visit will be needed 5-7 days after the procedure.
8. Will I need bone grafting?
At times, during an extraction procedure, it is determined that the removal of the tooth leaves a larger void in the bone than the size of the implant post. In this case, bone grafitng material will be placed in the area to give the implant more support. Defects in the bone are a common occurrence and each case is unique. Many times bone grafting can not be predicted and must be done during the extraction procedure.
9. What is the cost of Dental Implants?
The fee for implant treatment varies depending on the complexity of the procedure and the location. The total cost is similar to alternative treatment options. Some dental insurance plans cover a portion of the fee, but most do not. Payment options that can bring the cost within reach for most patients are available. Implants are considered a good investment because they help maintain bone and prevent further dental problems in the area where they are placed.
