Sometimes it is hard not to think of that cute little six year old as something other than a “little adult”, but when you are selecting a dentist for your child, that is exactly what you must do. Genesee Dental Group understands the importance of starting children off on the right foot for good oral health.
You should begin to maintain your child's teeth when they are an infant. Use a washcloth to rub the gums at bathtime, so that the baby will get used to the feeling of something being in their mouth. When those first teeth come in, make it a a habit to brush them with a small, soft brush without toothpaste. Be patient and slow. Show them how to brush, and let them give it a try. Even if they chew the bristles, they'll feel like they're doing it on their own, and that should make them happy. But parents, please continue to brush them at least once a day and reward them with something like reading a book when you are finished.
Set regular snack times to avoid constant exposure to cavity-causing foods. While snacking, include beverages to wash the mouth of food particles. Encourage good oral health and hygiene habits early.
Your Child’s First Dental Visit
Dental offices should be comfortable, warm, and child-friendly. We will talk with your child and answer his questions before performing any procedure all while avoiding using “scary” words like needle, drill, etc.
We believe that you need to determine the maturity level of your child as far as their first visit is concerned. Usually at 2-2 1/2 years of age they are ready to come with you or a sibling to their visit. They can get a ride in the chair or have their teeth counted, if they are ready. We want their first visit to be a happy one, so we'll do only as much as the child feels comfortable with.
