- Have you been considering orthodontics to correct an overbite or straighten crooked teeth?
- Are you a good candidate for braces?
Our dental team would like to talk with you about which orthodontic option may be the solution to your problem.
Many people have crowded or crooked teeth, protruding upper front teeth, or their upper and lower jaws don’t meet in the correct position. Orthodontic treatment is often the answer to correcting these and many other problems. Orthodontic treatment will straighten the teeth or move them into a better position. This not only improves your appearance but also the way your teeth bite together, all the while making your teeth easier to clean. Looking good and feeling good are important components in building self esteem. It is not uncommon for us to hear that a patient is feeling more self-confident even before their treatment is completed.
When your teeth don’t meet correctly, a strain is placed on the muscles of the jaw, causing jaw and joint problems and in some cases headaches. Orthodontic treatment can help reduce the strain by correcting your bite.
People have several misconceptions about braces. The biggest one is that I'm too old. Actually, adult patients make great patients because they have the motivation to change their teeth and their compliance concerning oral care and wearing of appliances is very good. Another misconception is that it will hurt. The current technology is such that it does not take as long and the discomfort is minimal. As with all dental treatment, everyone's situation is unique and we would like to explain what might be right for you.
Braces today are less noticeable than those of the past. Now, the front teeth typically have a bracket bonded directly to the tooth. Brackets can be metal, clear or colored, depending on the patient’s preference. Modern wires are often made of "space age" materials that exert a steady, gentle pressure on the teeth, so that the tooth-moving process may be faster and more comfortable for patients.
Also new to today’s orthodontic choices is the Invisalign system, which works through a series of nearly invisible, removable and comfortable aligners that no one can tell you’re wearing. Our patients love the ease of use and the flexibility that Invisalign offers. Go to our Promotions area and see our special offer.
Invisalign Frequently Asked Questions
What is Invisalign?
The clear way to straighten teeth without braces, using aligners. They are made of a clear, thin plastic that is invisible when worn.
How does it work?
Using 3-D computer imaging technology to simulate tooth movement, a series of custom aligners gradually move your teeth. You wear each aligner about 3 weeks, moving to the next aligner until completed.
What are 4 benefits over banding?
1. Nearly invisible- no one will know 2. Removable so that you can eat and drink 3. Easier to maintain oral hygiene- easier to brush and floss 4. Comfortable- fewer mouth abrasions
How long does treatment last?
Varies depending on complexity of case, but average time is generally 7-12 months. Limited case is 30 weeks (10 sets of aligners). Full treatment is 50 weeks (15 sets of aligners)
How often must I wear the aligners?
Day and night. You only remove them to eat, drink, brush and floss. Therefore, 22-23 hours per day is recommended.
Does Invisalign Hurt?
Aligners are not abrasive or have sharp edges. Soreness is mild and subsides after a few days (when changing to new aligners). It is suggested to put the new trays in before bed and take a mild pain releiver.
Does insurance cover Invisalign?
Any insurance policy that covers ortho will cover Invisalign.
What else can you tell me about Invisalign?
- The initial submission for 3-D imaging is free to the patient. Therefore you are under no obligation until treatment is accepted. - The Doctor has gone through a comprehensive training program to become certified in treating patients. - The FDA has classified Invisalign as a class II medical device for orthodontic treatment.
The following are the steps/appointments that are required for treatment:
1. A 30-40 minute appointment to take x-rays, impression and photos for teeth.
2. About 2-3 weeks later, the Doctor will receive a 3-D treatment plan. The patient will need to come in for a 15-20 minute appointment to approve the treatment plan. The patient will sign the authorization form at this time and have all the payment options explained to them.
3. In about 2 weeks all the aligners will arrive at the office. We will set the patient up for a 40-50 minute appointment for the delivery of the first set of aligners and give any necessary instructions.
4. About 3 weeks later, we need a 20 minute appointment to deliver the next 2 aligners. After this appoinment, we need to see the patient every 6 weeks until treatment is completed.
5. After all the aligners have been worn for the recommended time, a retainer will be constructed to be worn as directed by the Doctor.
